At Hearth Homes, we believe the whole person needs to be ministered to: body, mind and spirit. You don't worry about self esteem if you are hungry and cold. You don't worry about where you are spending the night if you have no self esteem. You have no self esteem when your world has been fraught with living in emotional turmoil. Its a vicious cycle that can only begin to be broken when they first feel safe and warm.
Our program is very different in that residents can come at almost whatever situation they are in, and stay as long as they need to, as long as they are progressing in their lives and following the family guidelines. We are one of the few agencies that work with CPS to bring families back together. We become their "family care team" and also work with their counselors, attorneys, guardian ad litems, etc.
We believe in the saving grace of Jesus Christ, to not only assist us in guiding our residents according to his Word, and His will and purpose for their lives, but to help them to come to know Him personally in their own lives.
We have lots of success stories, like Stephanie (name changed) who came with her 2 children because her husband became abusive and drinking heavily after returning from Afghanistan. She really wanted to make it work, but realized he needed much more than she could help him with, and had to go on with her life for her children. She had not worked and had no skills. She followed the Work First program, stayed for 18 months, ended up with a job at a bank, got married, moved to Portland near his family, had another baby, and so far is doing well and in a local church family. Or how about Nikki, abused at home since very young, had 2 children from different Dads, abusing drugs and stealing for her boyfriend. She came in desperation from the possibility of loosing her children to CPS. We worked with her and CPS, her attorney, the courts and after 9 months, she went to another agency as she realized she needed more structured living. That was a huge success as she came to know what she needed to really succeed. She is also in a local church family getting support from them.
There is much to accomplish to change the world, and we can do it together, one step, one person at a time. Our goal is to change peoples lives to become self-sufficient, contributing members of society.
